Head Student – Juliet Clare

February 27, 2026

Juliet’s journey at East Otago High School began as a Year 7 student arriving from Palmerston Primary. Back then, the school felt like a daunting labyrinth of scary big kids and strict rules. Today, as one of the 2026 Head Students, her perspective has shifted. Those giant peer support leaders from her past have been replaced by her own leadership, and the scary environment has become a place of endless opportunity.

Juliet’s early days were shaped by inspiring teachers like Ms. McLachlan and a love for subjects like English and Social Studies, where she could dive into storytelling.

Over the years, she has watched EOHS evolve, noting a significant boost in sports, arts, and cultural programmes. Her highlight? House Sports. “It’s a chance for everyone to get involved, have fun, and try different sports,” she says. “I love the team vibe and making connections with everyone in the House.”

Juliet isn’t just focused on the present; she has a clear vision for her future. After graduation, she plans to take a gap year to explore the rugged beauty of New Zealand’s West Coast and the Lower North Island.

Following her travels, she has her sights set on the Royal New Zealand Navy. Her experience at two Blue Light camps (Burnham Military Camp and Whenuapai Air Base) gave her a taste of service life. Surprisingly, she thrived in the structure. She enjoyed the routine and regimented lifestyle, and the three square meals a day, especially the “duff” (pudding)!

Whether it’s the intense preparation for the school Extravaganza or the bonding moments during Year 9 and 10 camps, Juliet values the pulling together that defines the EOHS spirit.

Her advice to younger students? “Grab every opportunity and get outside your shell to try new things. It will make your time at EOHS so much more interesting.”

Juliet lives by a motto that perfectly captures her resilience:

“A winner is just a loser that tried one more time.”
