Head Student – Greta McCaw
August 15, 2025
Greta McCaw, one of East Otago High School’s Deputy Head Students, began her journey at EOHS in Year 7, stepping into Mr. Cummings’ class with a mix of excitement and trepidation. Luckily, her two older sisters were already at the school, offering reassuring words and providing positive messages about EOHS.
Early experiences like Peer Support played a crucial role in building her confidence. This programme allowed her to connect with a Year 13 student, fostering a sense of belonging and easing any anxieties about navigating a new, larger school environment. Fun activities helped diminish the typical fears new students often face. Camp Iona further cemented these bonds, providing a chance to get to know both new teachers and classmates. Despite a touch of homesickness, it was a valuable bonding experience. Greta recalls one evening where students even cooked a meal for their parents – a memorable moment of shared responsibility.
What Greta truly cherishes about East Otago High School are the diverse opportunities it offers. She’s been a dedicated leader of Kapa Haka for four years and has actively participated in numerous school productions. A standout moment this year was securing the role of Gabriella in High School Musical, a testament to her deep love for performing.
This passion for performance clearly shapes Greta’s future aspirations. Next year, she plans to pursue a Bachelor of Performing Arts at Otago University. Looking further ahead, she hopes to train as a teacher in drama, music, or early childhood education, bringing her love of the arts to the next generation.
Greta’s motto for her final year is a powerful reminder: “Just do the most you can, it’s your last year.” Her advice to other students is equally inspiring: “Don’t worry about what others think; just follow your passions.”
